This lesson is a review of middle school measurement skills. During this lesson, students will be reviewing measurement tools, metric conversion, and finding area. (Most appropriate for grade levels 6-8.)
Lesson Time: 70 minutes
Student Activity 1: Your class will be split into two teams that will “race” to identify the measurement tool needed to measure a specific image.
Student Activity 2: Students groups will work together to convert measurements.
Student Activity 3: Student groups will work together to find the area of various figures.
Group work: Students will work in groups of 2-3 students. In order to save time, teachers are asked to create the groups before our Wizard arrives.
Math Standards:
6.G.1: Through composition into rectangles or decomposition into triangles, find the area of right triangles, other triangles, special quadrilaterals, and polygons; apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.
7.G.1: Solve problems involving similar figures with right triangles, other triangles, and special quadrilaterals. a. Compute actual lengths and areas from a scale drawing and reproduce a scale drawing at a different scale. b. Represent proportional relationships within and between similar figures.
