Program Description
DoD STARBASE motivates students to explore science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) as they continue their education. The academies serve schools that qualify based on socio-economic or academic need.
A variety of curriculum that meets national standards is presented to students while at STARBASE. Hands-on, minds-on activities are introduced to students which involves them in investigating Newton’s Laws of Motion, fluid mechanics, energy fundamentals, current and emerging technology, the Engineering Design Process, and much more.
Technology captivates the children as they use the computer lab to design space stations, rovers, and their own Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). Math is embedded throughout the curriculum and students use metric measurement, estimation, geometry, and data analysis. Teamwork is stressed as they work together to explore, explain, elaborate and evaluate concepts.
The military volunteers apply abstract principles to real world situations by giving lectures on the use of STEM in different settings and careers.
